Jim Thompson
The Thai Silk Company Limited
Textile Development and Home Furnishings Intern
15 JULY — 15 AUGUST 2025
140+ colorways. Three selected for the 2026 collection.
My first internship, inside a Thai heritage brand with a global reach. I joined a small, hands-on Home Furnishings team and was trusted with work that contributed to ongoing collections.

My contributions
- Created 140+ colorways; 3 selected by the creative director.
- Prepared 4 sample books for France and the UK.
- Prepared Excel materials and supported 3 photoshoots.
- Contributed to packaging design and archive photography.
- Co-wrote the creative director’s SACIT Sustainability Symposium speech.
Skills gained
- Colour decisions: maintaining tones and gradients across complex patterns.
- Design for use: balancing versatile basics with bolder palettes for upholstery and wall coverings.
- Material knowledge: warp and weft, cut and loop, backings, finishes, sampling, and hands-on weaving.
Prints, palettes & the collection.

I left looking a little closer.
“I now find myself thinking about colors and patterns in everyday life.”
Before this internship, I mostly thought about the finished design. Working with the team showed me how much sits behind it: thread colours, fabric composition, printing choices, sampling, and the small approvals that keep a collection moving.
I learned that a design has to work for its user, fulfil its purpose, and make sense commercially. It made me more certain that I wanted to study design, and gave me a much deeper appreciation for Thai craftsmanship, especially textiles.
- One decision has a ripple effect. Design approval shapes supplier sampling, sample books, costing, and launch timing.
- Creative work is hands-on. I experienced almost the full Home Furnishings collection cycle, from colourways to fabric preparation and shoots.
- Craft can keep moving forward. SACIT connected my interests in craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation.
